    Wesendonck Lieder Blog

This series of articles was written as I prepared to singer Wagner's Wesendonck Lieder with orchestra in 2013.
The set of five songs was written by Wagner while he was living on the estate of one of his patrons in Zurich. During that time, he fell deeply enough with the patron's wife, Mathilde Wesendonck, he put aside working on the Ring cycle, and composed these five songs set to her poetry.
The songs contain themes later used in Wagner's Tristan and Isolde, and their story is a great tale of unrequited romance.
