Lisa Houston is a professional writer and classical singer from Berkeley, California. She is a frequent contributor to Classical Singer Magazine and San Francisco Classical Voice.
Lisa began her career as an actress in New York, where she studied method acting at Lee Strasberg, and received her Bachelor's Degree in Acting from New York University. After college, Lisa toured Europe in avant garde theater, working mainly with director Robert Wilson, performing in the UK, France, Spain, and Italy before returning to New York and turning more devotedly to classical singing.
Lisa received her Master's degree in Vocal Performance from the New England Conservatory of Music after which she returned to California, where she performed leading roles with opera companies throughout the state, as well as performing as soloist with choral ensembles, symphonies and musical theatre companies.
Returning to Europe for several years, Lisa enjoyed living in Berlin and starring in Leipzig Kammeroper's productions of comic plays with music, playing the role of legendary Wagnerian diva Astrid Varnay in See You In Wallhalla and as the title role in The Last Diva on Broadway, and enjoying a successful concert tour of Lithuania.
Her most challenging role to date came singing the title role in Richard Strauss's Elektra in a workshop performance with Maestro Kent Nagano. More recently, Lisa took on a new role, that of stage director, creating a production of Puccini's Manon Lescaut for Berkeley Chamber Opera.
Lisa is a frequent contributor to various publications, writing about opera and classical singing, and interviewing the great singers of the day. Numerous articles and interview by Lisa can be read at San Francisco Classical Voice. She has also written program features for the San Francisco Opera, cover articles for Classical Singer Magazine, and features for Classical Music (UK.) She continues to freelance as soprano soloist in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Lisa studied for many years with the late Dickson Titus. She is currently a student of David Jones, and has learned Wagner and Strauss roles with Kammersängerin Deborah Polaski.
